USA Long-Term Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Estimate federal long-term capital gains tax (single filer), including the Net Investment Income Tax.

This is an estimate for general informational purposes only, not tax advice. It covers a single filer’s federal long-term capital gains tax only — it excludes state taxes, short-term gains (taxed as ordinary income), and assumes “other taxable income” is already net of deductions.

Long-term capital gains stack on top of your ordinary taxable income and are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on which bracket that income falls into. High earners may also owe the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) on top.

Example

  • With the default values shown above, this calculator returns: Total Taxable Income (incl. gain) ≈ USD 110,000.00; Capital Gains Tax ≈ USD 4,500.00; Net Investment Income Tax (3.8%) ≈ USD 0.00; Total Tax on Gain ≈ USD 4,500.00.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my gain use two different tax rates?

Long-term capital gains are stacked on top of your ordinary income, so part of a large gain can fall in the 15% bracket while the rest spills into the 20% bracket — this calculator computes that split automatically.

Who owes the Net Investment Income Tax?

Single filers with modified adjusted gross income over $200,000 owe an additional 3.8% NIIT on the lesser of their net investment income or the amount over that threshold.
