Employee Fully-Loaded Cost per Hour Calculator
Calculates the true hourly cost of an employee, including benefits, based on their annual salary and working hours.
This calculator adds annual salary and annual benefits cost together to get a business's total annual cost for an employee, then divides that by actual annual working hours (based on a realistic working-weeks figure, not just 52 weeks) to produce a true fully-loaded hourly cost. This figure is more useful than base hourly wage alone for project costing, billing rate decisions, and comparing the true cost of hiring versus contracting work out.
Example
- With the default values shown above, this calculator returns: Total Annual Cost ≈ $78000; Total Annual Working Hours ≈ 2000 hours; Fully-Loaded Cost per Hour ≈ $39.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 'fully-loaded' cost higher than base salary alone?
Because it adds employer costs beyond take-home pay — things like payroll taxes, health insurance contributions, retirement matching and other benefits — giving a more accurate picture of what an employee actually costs the business.
Why use working weeks rather than 52?
Using actual working weeks (after subtracting vacation, holidays and other paid time off) gives a more accurate hourly cost, since salary and benefits are still paid during those non-working weeks.
