Credit Card Minimum Payment Calculator

Estimates your card's minimum payment, the interest portion, and how much actually reduces your balance.

This calculator provides an estimate for general informational purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional financial, medical, engineering or legal advice.

Credit card minimum payments are usually calculated as a percentage of your balance, but a large chunk of that payment goes straight to interest before anything reduces what you owe. This calculator breaks the minimum payment into its interest component and its actual principal-reduction component, using your card's APR and minimum-payment percentage, so you can see exactly how much progress (if any) a minimum payment makes toward paying off the card.

Example

  • With the default values shown above, this calculator returns: Minimum Payment Due ≈ $60; Interest Charged This Month ≈ $55; Actual Balance Reduction ≈ $5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my balance reduction so much smaller than my payment?

Because a large share of a minimum payment on a high-APR card goes toward interest first, leaving only the remainder to actually reduce the principal — this is why paying only the minimum can take a very long time to clear a balance.

What if the interest charge exceeds the minimum payment?

In that case the 'balance reduction' shown will be negative, meaning your balance would actually grow even while making the minimum payment — a sign to pay more than the minimum.
