Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula?

FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ Withdrawal Rate. With the common 4% rule, that's the same as Annual Expenses × 25.

What withdrawal rate should I use?

4% (the 'Trinity Study' rule of thumb) is the most commonly cited figure, though some people use a more conservative 3–3.5% for extra safety, especially for very early or very long retirements.
