Fuel economy is measured very differently around the world — miles per US gallon (higher is better) versus liters per 100 kilometers (lower is better) — and because one measures distance-per-fuel while the other measures fuel-per-distance, converting between them isn't a simple multiplication. This calculator applies the standard conversion constant (235.214 divided by the mpg figure) to translate a US mpg rating directly into the metric L/100km figure used for vehicle comparisons in most of the world.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't this a simple linear conversion?
Because mpg measures distance per unit of fuel while L/100km measures fuel per unit of distance — they're inverses of each other, so converting between them involves dividing a constant by the value rather than multiplying by a fixed factor.
Does a lower or higher L/100km number mean better fuel economy?
Lower is better for L/100km, since it means less fuel is used to travel 100 km — this is the opposite direction from mpg, where a higher number means better economy.
