Australia HECS-HELP Repayment Calculator

Estimate your compulsory HECS-HELP / HELP loan repayment for the year.

This is an estimate for general informational purposes only, not financial advice. “Repayment income” includes taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, exempt foreign income, and net investment losses — it is not simply your salary.

Since the reform to a marginal repayment system, HECS-HELP repayments are calculated in bands: nil below $69,528, 15% of income in the next band, 17% in the band after that, and — unlike a normal marginal system — a flat 10% of your entire repayment income once it reaches $186,051.

Example

  • With the default values shown above, this calculator returns: Compulsory Repayment ≈ AUD 3,070.80; Effective Rate ≈ 3.41.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the top band work differently?

Above $186,051 of repayment income, you pay a flat 10% of your entire repayment income rather than just 10% of the amount above the threshold — this is a deliberate design choice in the current marginal system.

What counts as repayment income?

Repayment income is your taxable income plus any reportable fringe benefits, total net investment losses, reportable super contributions, and exempt foreign employment income — not just your gross salary.
