Horsepower and Torque Calculator
Enter torque (in pound-feet) and engine RPM to calculate horsepower.
Horsepower and Torque Calculator
Calculate horsepower from an engine's torque output and RPM using the standard automotive formula.
This calculator provides an estimate for general informational purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional financial, mechanical or engineering advice.
Horsepower and torque are related through engine speed: at any given RPM, horsepower equals torque multiplied by RPM and divided by the constant 5,252.
Example
- With the default values shown above, this calculator returns: Horsepower ≈ 228.48.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the formula?
Horsepower = Torque (lb-ft) × RPM ÷ 5,252. This constant comes from converting torque and rotational speed into the standard unit of horsepower.
Why do torque and horsepower curves cross at 5,252 RPM?
Because of how the formula is constructed, a torque curve (in lb-ft) and a horsepower curve for the same engine will always intersect at exactly 5,252 RPM on a dyno chart.
