Ideal Body Weight Calculator

Estimate ideal body weight from height and sex using the Devine formula.

This is an estimate for general informational purposes only and is not medical advice. It was originally developed for drug-dosing calculations, not as a personal weight goal.

The Devine formula estimates ideal body weight from height alone, originally developed to help calculate medication dosages. It gives a single reference number, not an ideal that everyone should aim for — healthy weight ranges are broader and depend on frame size, muscle mass and other factors.

Example

  • With the default values shown above, this calculator returns: Ideal Body Weight ≈ 65.9; Ideal Body Weight (lb) ≈ 145.4.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Devine formula the same as a healthy weight range?

No — it produces one reference number based on height and sex only. A healthy weight range (often assessed with BMI plus other factors) is broader and accounts for frame, muscle mass and overall health.

Why is height below 5 feet not factored in?

The Devine formula only adds weight for height above 5 feet (152.4cm); below that it uses the base value for your sex, which is a known limitation of the formula for shorter individuals.
